Tai Chi is a very old form of physical and mental exercise system from China. It was originally developed at the Buddhist Shaolin Temple to help the monks' condition and tone their bodies while focusing their minds.
Tai Chi is made up of a number of elements – flowing sequences of gentle movements, breathing exercises, meditation and visualisation techniques.

It is a holistic therapy that aims to develop and balance an individual's physical, mental and emotional well being. Its aim is to restore and maintain harmony within a person.
Tai Chi is best known for its series of graceful sequences that students learn and practice. As these movements have a self defence application if performed at speed, Tai Chi is called an internal or soft Martial Art. Additionally many of these movements imitate or reflect nature and animals.
Traditionally Tai Chi should be taught and practiced to each person's physical and mental needs and capabilities. Our teaching keeps to this tradition as well as embracing Tai Chi's holistic approach.

Tai Chi is particularly beneficial for those recovering from illness and injury as well as the elderly although it is suitable for all ages. It is excellent for building postural strength and balance. As it is also very useful for relaxation it can be used as part of a stress relief programme.
The benefits of practicing Tai Chi include:
- Improved respiratory and pulmonary health
- Improved posture and body awareness
- Improved balance and co-ordination
- Improved mobility
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduced stress
